Progressive School Age Gymnastics

THE PROGRESSIVE GIRLS’ GYMNASTICS PROGRAM uses a progressive developmental, skill-based approach. Through this program young gymnasts can continue to develop motor skills, coordination, flexibility, strength, conditioning, artistic lines and gymnastics skills. The program focuses on progressions and basic gymnastic skill development. We first group our classes by age, as we believe that it is important to be with age appropriate peers to ensure desirable social dynamic between girls in each class. Tumblin’ Tykes is for ages 6-8 while Recreational is for ages 9 and up. (Boys are divided by ability level only). We then group the class by ability levels. The levels range from Level 1 to Level 3. We try to individualize instruction in an effort to meet each student's needs since all children learn at different rates. Each class begins with a general warm-up and stretching. During the class the children will work on 2-3 Olympic events each week. Emphasis will be placed on learning new skills/routines as well as reinforcing good basic fundamentals. Strong emphasis is placed on body awareness and safety.
Skills taught in each level are a combination of strength, flexibility and gross motor skills. Girls levels 1 through 4 offer gymnastics skill progressions on tumbling, elements of dance, trampoline, balance beam, uneven bars, and vault. Skill cards are utilized to track each gymnast’s progress. In result, athletes progress more efficiently and thusly advance to more difficult skills in a shorter period of time. As athletes develop higher level of competency with their skills, the instructor will consider the athlete’s advancement to the next class level. The decision to advance or not advance the athlete to the next class level is the instructor’s decision.
WRGA progressive classes are 1 hour in duration and practice 1 day per week. Athletes who desire to take a second class in the same week will be given a 10% discount on the second class. Each class level will include all 4 Olympic events including vault, bars, beam and floor. Trampolines will also be utilized in the gymnast’s training as it aids in the development of air-awareness, body calisthenics, and the development of new skills.
THE PROGRESSIVE BOYS’ GYMNASTICS PROGRAM also uses a progressive developmental, skill-based approach. Strength of body and character are powerful tools on the road to manhood. Gentlemen can begin developing their strength, flexibility, and confidence as early as 5 years of age. Classes are offered for beginning, intermediate, and advanced boys. The gentlemen will learn all of the male Olympic events including vault, parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse, rings and floor through a carefully planned curriculum that permits each individual to progress at their own pace.
Like the girls’ program the boys progress through 3 levels of gymnastics training that coincide with the skills mandated through USAG. All classes are one hour long and taught by a safety-educated instructor. Each class consists of an approximately ten-minute warm-up, 3 fifteen-minute gymnastics rotations, and a 5-minute game time.
Gymnastics provides athletic training for young boys and prepares them for any sport they may play including soccer, diving, football, baseball, and track. Of course, a long and successful gymnastics career is great, too!
